CORPORATE PROFILE

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), was created vide Act No. 48 of 1999 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to develop the Nigerian Airspace to a level consistent with the requirements of the ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPSs). The Agency is saddled with the provision of Air Navigation Services to ensure a SAFE, efficient, expeditious and economic flight operations.

In compliance with the mandate, the agency has set a vision of making the Nigerian Airspace rank among the SAFEST airspaces in the African-Indian Ocean (AFI) region and indeed, the world over.
OBJECTIVES
In order to achieve its mission, the Agency has the following objectives:
·         To continue to provide safe and functional air navigation services that will meet international standards.
·         To increase Air Traffic Control (ATC) capacity in order to manage the increasing air traffic volume and simultaneously reduces delays.
·         To enhance the service quality.
·         To reduce cost for users.
 
FUNTIONS OF THE AGENCY
The Agency is to:
A.      Provide air traffic services in Nigeria, including air traffic control, visual and non-visual aids, aeronautical telecommunication services and electricity supplies relating thereto, to enable public transport, private business and military aircraft fly, as far as practicable and safe as possible.
B.      Generally, secure the safety, efficiency and regularity of air navigation.
C.      Require persons engaged in, employed in or in connection with air navigation to supply metrological information for the purpose of air navigation as may be deemed appropriate from time to time.
D.      Provide adequate facilities and personnel for effective security of navigational aids outside the airport perimeters.
E.       Procure, install and maintain adequate Communication, Navigation,Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) facilities at all airports in Nigeria.
F.       Ensure an effective co-ordination in the use of the Nigerian airspace in line with established standards and procedures.
G.      Hold meetings with the Armed Forces on Nigeria’s international obligations as they relate to civil and military co-ordination.
H.      Maintain permanent liaison between the civil air traffic services unit and all relevant air defense unit in order to ensure the daily integration of segregation of civil and military air traffic operating within the same or immediate adjacent portions of the Nigeria Airspace employing civil or military radars as necessary.
I.        Obviate the need for civil aircraft to obtain special air-defense clearance;
J.        Take necessary steps to prevent as far as possible ,penetration of controlled airspace by any aircraft, civil or military, in co-ordination with the air traffic control unit concerned;
K.      Undertake systems engineering development and implementation for communication, navigation, surveillance and air traffic management.
L.       Charge for services provided  by the Agency.
M.    Co-ordinate the implementation of Aeronautical, Search and Rescue Services , and
N.      Discharge the operational, technical and financial air traffic services commitments arising from Nigeria’s membership of international organizations and other air navigation service agencies.
 
 
OPERATIONAL PRINCIPLE
Nigerian Airspace Management Agency’s implementation of the roles contained in the Act of establishing it is guided by the following principles:
1.       Aircraft operating agencies and the flying public are our primary customers and must be given the highest quality services.
2.       Aviation equipment manufacturers and the other related agencies are those we rely on for our operational equipment/services.
3.       Our Aviation Communication Infrastructure is the backbone for all airport based enterprises and services (public and private) communications needs
PRIORITY AREA
A.      Provision of efficient airspace management services.
B.      Installation and efficient maintenance of air navigation facilities in all the airport and air routes.
C.      Restructuring of the routes for positive area airway control.
D.      Provision of total Radar coverage for Nigeria’s airspace.
E.       Liaise with international organization for improvement of our navigation services.
F.       Provision of Aviation Unified Communications Infrastructure
 
STAFF OF THE AGENCY
A Managing Director/Chief Executive, who is also the accounting officer of the organization, heads the agency. His appointment is on a 5-year-term and may be reappointed for a further 5 years subject to satisfactory performance.
NAMA has three directorates  namely
1.       Operations
2.       Electronics & engineering services
3.       Finance and admin
Each   of the directorate is headed by an Executive Director, who is responsible to the Managing Director for the day to day administration and operations of the agency.
Under the office of the MD/CE are also Legal, Audit, Estate, Information Communications Technology, Public Affairs , Protocol, SMS/QA and Procurement/Logistics. The operational staffs are spread throughout the over twenty (20) airports in the country, to ensure safe and economic air navigation within their appropriate airspaces.
