The Directorate of operations is made up of six departments:
- Air Traffic Control Operation/ATC Standards.
- Airspace Planning and ATC Technical Evaluation.
- Search and Rescue Civil/Military Coordination
- Aeronautical Information Services
- Aeronautical Communications
- Aeronautical Chart Services.
Air Traffic Control Operation / Standards: the department is responsible for air traffic control operations within the nation’s airspace. It formulates policies in respect of air traffic control and ensures implantation of policy matters through directives to the field regions.
- Airspace Planning and Technical Evaluation: the department is responsible for planning airspace organization, including the facilities and services to be implemented. It design instrument approach and landing procedures, coordinates the training and retraining of procedures, coordinates the training and retraining of personnel and participates in licensing air traffic control personnel. It also ensures that ATC personnel remain current through proficiency checks and evaluates equipment and services to ensure compliance with international standards.
- Search and Rescue: in line with international standards, the agency has in place Department of SAR. At the field region, aeronautical SAR is coordinated through two RCCs in Lagos and Kano, and Six RSCs in Ilorin, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Abuja and Enugu. The Agency has made tremendous efforts to equip these units for effective co-ordination of SAR exercises.
Aeronautical Information Service: This department is responsible for the collection, collation, editing, documentation and dissemination of information on aeronautical facilities, services, and procedures (associated with facilities and services) within the Kano Flight Information Region (FIR). The dissemination is done with the following publications: Aeronautical Information publication (AIP), AIP Supplements, Aeronautical Information Circulars and Notice to Airmen (NOTAM).
It is responsible for pre-flight and post flight information and collection of flight plans.
5. Aeronautical Telecommunications Service: The department is responsible for Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Service, which entails exchanging all categories of messages necessary for the smooth, efficient, safe, regular and economical operations of air traffic services among the airport within Nigeria and between Nigeria and the neighboring countries. It is also responsible for telephone services, which are employed in the day to day administration of the agency.
6. Aeronautical Chart Service: The ACS department produces chart and maps for use in flight operations covering the entire Nigeria airspace. This includes Airspace from 50 feet above. The department is currently planning to undertake the survey and mapping of obstructions masts and structures within Nigerian Airspace in line with World Geodetic Survey WGS 84. |
