The Air Traffic safety Electronics and Engineering Services Directorate of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), is one of the three Directorates that constitute the agency. It is structured to incorporate the following departments:

1.      Electronic Communications
2.      Navigational Aids
3.      Surveillance
4.      Electro-Mechanical
5.      Workshop, Planning and Logistics
6.      Terrestial Systems
 
FUNCTIONS

1.      Electronic Communications: The primary function of this department is to provide, install and maintain communication facilities that are employed in Air Traffic Management Services and operates for improved and enhanced Air-Navigation Safety. These includes:
 
A.     VHF Air-to-Ground Radio Communication Network
 
B.      HF Voice and Data Network
 
C.    Satellite Communications Network (AFISNET) supporting the following services
 
i.         Aeronautical Fixed Telecom Network (AFTN)
ii.       ATS Direct Speech (ATS-DS)Network
iii.      Remote Controlled Air-to-Ground(RCAG)Network
 
D.     Telephone/Switching systems.
        
2.      Navigational Aids: The department is responsible for installation and maintenance of En-route facilities. Approach and Landing facilities, which include the following:
 
A.     Instrument Landing systems (ILS)
 
B.      Very High Frequency Omni Directional Radio Range (VOR)
 
C.    Doppler VOR(DVOR)
 
D.     Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)
 
E.      Beacons
 
(1). Locator Beacon (LB)
(2). Non Directional Beacon (NDB)
 
F.       Very High Frequency Direction Finder(VDF)
 
3.      Surveillance: The surveillance department is responsible for the provision of both the primary surveillance Radar (PSR) and the Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) for the purpose of Radar control of the airspace. The Nigerian ATM Project aimed at providing coverage for the Nigerian Airspace in progress.
 
4.      Electro-Mechanical: The principal duties of this department are to provide, install and maintain Generating plants, Air-conditioners, Refrigerators, Vehicles and Pneumatic/hydraulic based equipment that will enhance air navigation safety.
 
5.      Planning unit: this unit is responsible for system planning, training, project    monitoring and personnel licensing.
 
6.      Calibration of Navaids: Calibration of Navaids is a permanent maintenance feature of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). Calibration exercises are carried out on a regular and sustained basis.
 
Dakar based French Calibration Company (ASECNA) undertakes this responsibility for NAMA on contract basis. Not all Navaids are calibrated at the same time. The exercise is carried out as and when particular equipment is due for it. All equipments must pass the calibration test before being put to use.
Calibration has been a quality maintenance culture in NAMA since creation.
