NAMA GOES HITECH IN AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
...ACQUIRES MOTORISED CONTROL TOWER
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), has acquired another motorized Air Traffic control tower, otherwise known as (Mobile Tower) for air traffic management under emergency situations. This brings to two such vital facilities.
The first of its kind in the country’s history of air traffic management, the motorized tower currently stationed in Lagos can be mobilized to any of the southern Airports for Air Traffic Management.
The technical configuration of the tower which cost Ninety million naira (N90,000,000) include among other things, four (4) Aeronautical Radio Frequency comprising two very High Frequency Radio (VHF), and one Frequency Modulated Radio (FM). Also configured in the mobile tower is a very high Directional Finder (VDF), used for indicating the bearing of an aircraft.
The VDF is voice activated. The tower also has a 25KVA generating set attached to it to the power system. The Mobile Tower is motorized on a brand new Renault 210 Trailer. The Tower also has a speed and wind direction as well as other meteorological facilities.
Considering that the aviation World is itching towards the Global Positioning System (GPS) for air navigation NAMA has also decided to configure the Mobile Tower with the state of the art Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers in order to keep the system current should Nigeria decide to adopt the GPS mode for air navigation. The entire tower system has backup spares to ensure its continuous serviceability. NAMA plans to acquire an additional mobile tower to serve the Northern segment of the Nigerian Airspace.
