TowerThe Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), was created vide Act No.48 of 1999 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to develop the Nigerian Airspace to a level consistent with the requirements of the ICAO Standards And Recommended Practices (SARPS). The Agency therefore is saddled with the provision of Air Traffic Management to ensure a safe, efficient, expeditious and economic flight operations.

In compliance with this mandate, the NAMA has set a vision on making the Nigerian Airspace rank among the safest airspaces in the Africa-Indian Ocean Region and indeed, the world over.

Funtions Of The Agency

  The Agency is to:
  Bullet Provide air traffic services in Nigeria, including air traffic control, visual and non-visual aids, aeronautical telecommunication services and electricity supplies relating thereto, to enable public transport, private business and military aircraft fly, as far as practicable and as possible.
  Bullet Generally, secure the safety, efficiency and regularity of air navigation.
  Bullet Require persons engaged in, employed in or in connection with air navigation to supply meteorological information for the purpose of air navigation as may be deemed appropriate from time to time.
  Bullet Provide adequate facilities and personnel for effective security of navigational aids outside the airport parameters.
  Bullet Procure, install and maintain adequate Communication, Navigation Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) facilities at all airports in Nigeria.
  Bullet Ensure an effective co-ordination in the use of the Nigerian airspace in line with established standards and procedures.
  Bullet Hold meetings with the Armed Forces on Nigeria’s international obligations as they relate to civil and military co-ordinations.
  Bullet Maintain permanent liaison between the civil air traffic services unit and all relevant air defense units in order to ensure the daily integration or segregation of civil and military air traffic operating within the same or immediate adjacent portions of the Nigerian Airspace employing civil or military radars as necessary.
  Bullet Obviate the need for civil aircraft to obtain special air defense clearance.
  Bullet Take necessary steps to prevent as far as possible, penetration of controlled airspace by any aircraft, civil or military, in co-ordination with the air traffic control unit concerned.
  Bullet Undertake systems engineering development and implementation for communications, navigation, surveillance and air traffic management.
  Bullet Charge for services provided by the Agency.
  Bullet Co-ordinate the implementation of Aeronautical, Search And Rescue services.
  Bullet Discharge the operational, technical and financial air traffic services commitments arising from Nigeria’s membership of international organizations and other air navigation services agencies.
